February is Black History Month, and it’s an important time to honor the contributions of African Americans inventors to our society. Children and their families can read picture books or articles about the contributions of each historical figure. While learning about a person and their invention, children can answer comprehension questions, discuss why the invention is important, and practice speech sounds while reading aloud.
Below are suggestions of African American inventors to study in speech therapy:
Sarah Boone, inventor of an improved ironing board
Garrett Morgan, inventor of the traffic light
Marie Van Brittan Brown, inventor of audio-visual home security systems
Alexander Miles, inventor of automatic elevator doors
