Butterflies and other bugs are fun topics for speech and language activities. Many speech and language goals can be met while studying the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly, or by comparing bugs vs. spiders. Fictional characters can bring these topics to life for younger children, while older children may enjoy some non-fiction readings about habitats and facts. During reading, there will also be ample opportunity for speech sounds, such as /r/ and /s/.
Below are suggestions of books about bugs. Happy reading!
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” by Eric Carle
“Miss Spider’s Tea Party,” by David Kirk
“Senorita Mariposa,” by Ben Gundersheimer
“The Very Quiet Cricket,” by Eric Carle
