Mardi Gras Books & Extension Activities

Writer's picture: Melissa GoffMelissa Goff

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is happening this week! Mardi Gras has its historic roots with the start of the Easter season, but today, Mardi Gras has evolved into a cultural celebration. Mardi Gras is one of my favorite themes for speech and language. While reading stories, caregivers can ask comprehension questions. Children love learning about the parade and the King cake. Following reading, there are also many fun crafts to make as extension activities while targeting speech and language goals.

Below is a list of books about Mardi Gras. Happy reading!

  • “12 Days of Mardi Gras,” by Melissa Thibault

  • “Delphine Denise and the Mardi Gras Prize,” by Brittany Mazique

  • “The Little Book of King Cake,” by Matt Haines

  • “Mimi’s First Mardi Gras” by Alice Couvillon

Readers: Do you celebrate Mardi Gras at home?
