Ocean Speech & Language Activities

whale's tail

Summer is just around the corner! The ocean is a great topic for spring speech and language activities. There are many ways to target speech and language goals while studying marine animals. Fictional characters can bring these topics to life for younger children, while older children may enjoy a deep dive into the habitats of their favorite ocean animals. During reading, there will be ample opportunity for /s/ and /s blends/, as well as using attributes to describe animals in the pictures.

Below are suggestions of books about ocean animals. Happy reading!

  • “The Snail and the Whale,” by Julia Donaldson

  • “Over and Under the Waves,” by Kate Messner

  • “Sneakers, the Seaside Cat” by Margaret Wise Brown

  • “Mister Seahorse,” by Eric Carle
