When many people think of speech therapy, the first things that come to mind are late talking toddlers and preschoolers working on their pronunciation (speech sounds). As a speech therapist, I have certainly treated late talkers and speech sounds. However, I also love the incredible diversity of ages I can serve as a speech therapist. Did you know speech therapy is available for teens? Middle and high school can be demanding for teens who have learning disabilities and/or language delays.
Below are some of the ways speech-language pathologists can help teens:
Support in written expression
Expanding grammar and vocabulary skills
Reading comprehension
Collaborating with teachers on classroom novels or other academic topics
Social skills
Persisting speech sound errors
Myo therapy
Working with teens, their families, and their schools in numerous disciplines is another wonderful aspect of my job as an SLP.
Readers: If your teen is struggling academically, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
