“The Polar Express” Speech & Language Extension Activities

I consider “The Polar Express” to be a classic Christmas story. The book follows the journey of a little boy aboard a secret train to the North Pole. The boy takes home one of Santa’s sleigh bells. There are many lessons that can be built off of this book. Below are some ideas:

  1. Make Hot Chocolate - The children all drink hot chocolate aboard the Polar Express! While making this delicious treat at home, work on sequencing with a beginning, middle, and end + describing the drink.

  2. Make a Train Craft - Focus on following 1-2 step directions, describing, and prepositions while crafting.

  3. Practice Speech Sounds While Reading Aloud - Model these sounds for your child, and then have the child say the words back.

  4. Answer Writing Prompts - Some ideas include: “What would you ask for if you met Santa?” or “What do you think would be the best part of riding the Polar Express?”

Readers: Have you tried any storybook extension activities at home?
