What is “Myo” Therapy, and Does Your Child Need It?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy–myo for short–works the muscles of the face and mouth. There is a focus on proper chewing and swallowing, tongue resting posture, and breathing. Myo therapy is recommended for ages 4+.

What are some of the signs a child may need an evaluation?

  • Messy eating

  • Mouth breathing

  • Poor or disrupted sleep

  • Speech sound errors

  • Current or past history of tongue or lip ties

  • Oral habits, such as thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use

Myo therapy treats the whole child. It requires a team approach, and the SLP often collaborates with a dentist and/or ENT during care. A child with speech sound errors can continue to work on their speech sounds while also pursuing myo therapy.

What are the goals of myo therapy & who can provide treatment?

Goals include proper tongue resting posture, breathing through the nose, and improved feeding and swallowing skills. Speech therapists and dental hygienists who have taken additional training may provide treatment.
