March is Women’s History Month, and there are many ways to target speech and language goals while studying the contributions of women. I love selecting books from the local library about historical figures of interest. During reading, children can practice speech sounds, target grammar while describing pictures, and practice sequencing events following reading.
Below are suggestions of historical figures, as well as corresponding books about their lives:
Amelia Earhart, pilot
Amelia Who Could Fly, by Mara Dal Corso
Malala Yousafzai, education advocate
My Name is Malala, by Malala Yousafzai
Shirley Chisholm, politician
Shirley Chisholm is a Verb, by Veronica Chambers
Maria Tallchief, ballet dancer
Tallchief: America’s Prima Ballerina, by Maria Tallchief and Rosemary Wells
Readers: Who have you studied during Women’s History Month?
